The right lighting can maximize the versatility of your dining space.
Start at the top.
Your dining table light is often the centerpiece of the room -- and it’s also your chance to make a big statement:
With a longer or rectangular dining room table consider a linear chandelier or multiple pendants running the length of the table.
Spice up the look of a round table with staggered pendants or mini-chandeliers.
If you use your table for everyday tasks – like homework, hobbies or playing board games – consider a chandelier equipped with a downlight.
Choose a chandelier with LED light. The pure white light can make your crystal and silverware sparkle.
Pick the right size.
Over a dining table, the rule of thumb is to take the length and width of your room in feet and add those numbers. Turn that number into inches – and that’s the minimum width your fixture should be. For example: a 12 x 15-foot room would be: 12 + 15 = 27. You’d want a fixture at least 27 inches wide (or in diameter).
Hang accordingly.
When hanging lighting over a dining table, leave about 30 to 36 inches of space between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture.
Layer on accent lighting.
Flank a buffet or sideboard with wall sconces. Choose fixtures that complement the style of your chandelier.
Use low voltage LED tape lighting behind perimeter coves, inside tray ceilings or around the millwork of a coffered ceiling.
Accent displayed objects or a special picture with hard strip lighting.
