Glare is a visual sensation caused by excessive and uncontrolled brightness. It can be disabling or simply uncomfortable. It is subjective, and sensitivity to glare can vary widely. Older people are usually more sensitive to glare due to the aging characteristics of the eye. Reducing glare is an effective way to improve the lighting.
How are glare produced?
For an object to be visible, light falls on it and is reflected or transmitted to the eye, resulting in both vision and perception. Generally speaking, if you increase the amount of light that falls on the object, you increase its brightness. The object then becomes more visible, particularly if its surround has a low brightness. The result is a high contrast between the object and its surrounding. Too much brightness and contrast can produce glare.
How many categories are there in glare?
1. Direct glare is caused by looking directly at a bright light source, such as a lamp (light bulb) or bright window.
2. Reflected glare is caused by light reflecting from a highly reflective surface such as a computer screen, mirror or glossy magazine.
3. Discomfort glare is the sensation of annoyance or even pain induced by overly bright sources. Discomfort glare occurs when the observer experiences physical irritation.
4. Disability glare is the reduction in visibility caused by intense light sources in the field of view. And disability glare occurs when vision is virtually blocked.
Reducing glare is an effective way to improve the lighting.
